INFECTION AT TIMARU

TIMARU, May 16. At the Hospital Board to-day an unusual number of oases of infedtioais diseases were renorbed as follows: Scarlet fever .10, diphtheria 6, enteric 5. Two of the enteric- cases proved fatal at Fairlie. The Board decided to take steps for at gc-od inspection of the district, in view of plague rats, as found in Auckland, and which may be. brought in by vessels, and to- generally carry out the regulations. A GENEROUS OFFER.
In connection with the Coronation celebrations at Temu'ka, the Mayor, Mr. T. Buxton, M.P., -undertook to give £124 to provide a permanent memorial in the shape of an equipped swimming bath in the Park. Such expenditure will receive a Government .subsidy. ARBITRATION COURT AWARD. DUNEDIN, May 16. The Arbitration Court held a sitting lie re to-day. In a recommendation for an award ..in the dispute of the Hotel, Restaurant., and Boarding-house Employees Industrial Union of Workers versus the Coffee Palace Co., and other private hotelkeepers, Mr. Breen, who appeared for the Union, stated that the alterations were a rise of 2s per week for waitresses and Is for housemaids, with provision •for 'probationary housemaids. There was a reduction of 2s 6d per week in laundry work, and the hours of men employed in private hotels were increased to 62 per week. Mr. Pryor objected to the award being made, except in respect of the Coffee Palace, the Leviathan Hotel, and Wood’s Hotel, which l have been working under the award for two years. Mr Breen also applied for the inclu--sion of the Trocadero restaurant in the _a\vard. The Court reserved its decision. PREVENTION OF DISEASE. WELLINGTON, May 16 Dr. Hardwicke Smith, Medical Superintendent, submitted a report to the Wellington Hospital Board recommending that the board control the investigation and prevention of disease in ac* cordance with the clause in the new hospital Act, which stipulates that such boards shall take over such work. The board resolved to appoint two inspectors at a salary of £lB5 and travelling expenses. The Public Health Department is to be asked to take over supervision of these offices for the time being
