Persistent rumors are circulated of the existence of a plot to assassinate General Madero, the insurgent leader, on his arrival here. REBELS BECOMING RESTLESS. THROUGH THE DELAY OF PEACE. (Received May 21, 5.5 p.m.) MEXICO CITY, May 20. The Federals have evacuated Manila, after a four days’ fight. Of the rebels a hundred were killed or wounded. , There is restlessness among the rebels owing to the delay in the peace announcement.

PROSPECTS OF PEACE. ARMISTICE MAY BE EXTENDED. (Received May 22, 1.15 a,an.) MEXICO CITY, May 21. General Madero has left Jaurez for Mexico City to complete the peace arrangements, and the armistice may b< extended for ten days. HOW JAUREZ WAS TAKEN. WOMEN’S DEVOTION TO WOUNDED. Special messages in the Sydney describe the fierce battle of Jaurez in graphic detail. It is stated in earlier wires that the barricades erected in the streets by he Federals were stormed by the insurrectos, upon whom a pretty severe fire was being kept up from the guns mounted on the local gaol and church. Many Americans were fighting with the rebels under Colonel Garibaldi. The gambling-rooms in the town were filled with the wounded, of whom there are 300, and the dead are lying about unburied. ■

BATTLE AROUND JAUREZ. REBELS SET TOWN ON FIRE. Desperate as the fighting was around Jaurez, the casualties were comparatively few, numbering only sixty. Late one afternoon the insurrectos started a fire, which filled the streets of the town with smoke. After darkness had set in the flashes of light from the burning ruins gave the rebels an occasional view of the church where the Federals were cooped up, and with each glimpse of the enemy thus obtained the revolutionaries would pour their fire into the building. At 7 p.m. General Navarro, commanding the Government forces, agreed to stop the fight while the rebels removed their wounded. SHORT BUT RED-HOT FIGHT. REBELS’ DECISIVE WIN. After a resistance by the Federals, which, though brief, was red-hot while it lasted, rebel reinforcements, under . general Blanco, arrived, and captured town. r ■ • V The insurrectos at once stormed the old church, the Federals’ stronghold, and the gaol, both of which were taken after a desperate resistance. The prisoners were released from the gaol, and a torch was then applied to the building. ‘ “ VIVA MADERO!” REBEL LEADER’S SPEECH TO FEDERAL PRISONERS. When General Madero arrived at the corral in which the Federal prisoners were quartered he delivered to them an address that was full of sympathy and encouragement. The rebel leader lauded them for their bravery, and assured them that in his heart and in the hearts of his men there were no feelings of enmity towards those whom they were' flghl ins m a few days, added General Madero, peace would be restored, and the prisoners would then be free. In the meantime they would be treated as brothers.

The vast throng of prisoners and the insurrectos who had gathered to hear their leader’s speech, cheered wildly and shouted, “Viva, Madero!”
