Air Carlyon, when about to retire luf the night, noticed that the chimney was smoking in a peculiar manner. He made a careful investigation, but could find nothing amiss, and' concluded that trie high wind was affecting the draught of the chimney. Sometime after retiring, Air Carlyon was aroused by a strong smell of smoke, and on reaching the dining-room found the wall above the mantelpiece burning fiercely. All attempts to extinguish the fire, which had obtained a firm hold, were fruitless and fanned' by the high wind, the flames scon gained complete mastery of the building, which was burned to the ground.
