ILLNESS AMONG MAORIS.
SUPPOSED TYPHOID FEVER.
TURNS OUT TO. BE INFLUENZA
. The .Sanitary Inspector to the Cook County Council (Mr R. Tlielwell) presented! the following report to the Council yesterday:
“Three cases of infectious disease have been notified during the last two months, one each of enteric, typhoid, and scarlet fever, at Wharekaia, Patutahi and Te Arai respectively. The two former were sent to the hospital for treatment, the latter being nursed at home. This patient- is now convalescent, and none of the family have developed the disease. The necessary fumigation has been carried out. I understand that nine cases of typhoid have been reported to the office by telephone from Muriwai, all the case® said to be native children, but so far no official notification has been received' from a qualified medical man as required by the Act and consequently there is no responsibility on the Council to take any action in the matter, and I have made no move pending proper notification. I would remind the Council that a similar occurrence was thrashed out recently and' the position pointed out to the District Health Officer, who instructed Dr. Wi Repa to take the necessary steps to deal with the outbreak. In these circumstances I respectfully ask the Council for instructions as to what action 1 shall take in connection with this reported outbreak at
Muriwai.” The clerk stated that he had since been advised that the cases at Muriwai which were supposed to 1 be fever were influenza.
