NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(By Argus.)

The two-year-okl racing for the present season has come to an end, and Multiform’s record as a stake-winner at that age still holds the leading position, When Culprit, in January, added the Wellington Stakes to her list of triumphs her winning total was raised to £2360, and as this was o_nly £4Ol behind Multiform’s record (£2761), matters assumed a rosy tint for Culprit to beat the record, as she claimed many valuable engagements at the back end. The daughter of Charlemagne 11., however, met defeat in all her subsequent efforts, with the exception of the Autumn Nursery Handicap, the stake for which amounted to £250, so than her earnings as a youngster stopped at £2610, or £lsl below Multiform’s record. Not much value, outside the breaking of a. record, of course, attaches to the two-year-old stake question, for my readers will not require to be told that the stake money run for in the present day is very largely in excess of that provided when Multiform was engaged in battling for supremacy. Multiform was saddled up on 11 occasions as a two-year-old, eight . victories going down to his credit, while in his three l other engagements at that age he 'filled 1 the role of runner-up to his stable mate, Gold Medallist. The interesting fact in connection, with Multiform’s two-year-old stake record is that he beat all ages for the leading position on the winning list that season, a feat which stands by itself in New 1 Zealand racing. There was a time (remarks the Canterbury Times in the course of a leading article on .steeplechasing) when . the South Island could hold its own with the North Island where jumping events were concerned, but of late years all the honors of the steeplechase meetings have gone to the other side of Cook Strait. It looks as if this experience were to be repeated! this year, for there is a sad dearth of fencing horses in the South, and, judging by the nominations for the Northern meetings, when the time arrives for the selection of representatives for the Grand National Hurdle Race and the Grand National Steeplechase there will be a marked preponderance of Northerners. Whether climatic conditions or a difference in the sporting inclinations of the people are responsible for this it is difficult to say, but the fact remains that the Northerners are much more fond of the jumping game, and that they are schooling and preparing horses for the winter season much more liberally than are their fellows in the South.

Royal Scotch, who: earned distinction in the decision of the Hawke’s Bay Stakes on Saturday last, was a lucky purchase by Mr E. J. Watt, or, perhaps, it would be more correct, the colt’s dam is in that category. At the dispersal of the Yaldhurst stud in 1908 the Australian-bred mare Barley Bree, in foal to Royal Artillery, was knocked down to Mr H. Chisholm, of Sydney, at 200 gs. .Some misunderstanding with regard to the interpretation, of a commission left Barley Bree on Mr Chisholm’s hands, and Mr Watt bought the brown mare. In due time Barley Bree threw a colt as the result of her union with Royal Artillery, and 1 the youngster who scored! in the Hawke’s Bay Stakes under the title of Royal Scotch is the produce. Reservoir is not likely to be seen at his best at the Great Northern meeting, while his efforts over the big fences have been far from satisfactory this week. Old Paritutu was tried over a few of the steeplechase obstacles, recently, in company with Okaihau, hut the Castor gelding jumped slow and warily. His showing was far from convincing, and he will have to improve wonderfully to have any chance in the big steeplechase. Kremlin is standing up to his work well and all going right with the old son of Stepniak he may earn 'his oats this winter.

Paisano fairly captured th& touts on Tuesday by his clever exposition over the small fences, for cleaner and, smarter jumping has not 'been seen at Ellerslie for many a day.
