P.B. RUGBY UNION
MEETING OF, MANAGEMENT
COMMITTEE,
The usual weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Poverty Bay Rugby ‘Union was held last evening. There were present: Messrs H. E. Maude ’(chairman), W. S. McCredie, W. S. Coleman, A. R. Gat land, R. Somervell, J. A. Eaton, W. Howard, E. L. Maude and D. Cowan (secretary). Mr. ;R. MoWhirter, the referee in last Saturday’s match between KaitiCity and Y.M.C.A. at Victoria “Domain, reported having ordered "a Kaiti-City player off the field. After inquiring into the case, i't was decided’ to- suspend the- player for cue week.
A letter was received from the hon. secretary of tlie Auckland Rugby Union stating that the Auckland Union could not see its way to offer any financial assistance to the Poverty Bay .Union in connection with a. visit of its representatives to Auckland. The letter also* pointed out that such match could not be considered a special challenge match. There was little probability of Auckland being able to "play any representative matches before the latter end of August. The Chairman explained that it would cost about £IOO to. send a team to Auckland and it would be imprudent on the Union’s part, in view of the present state cf the finances, to undertake such an expenditure .for the barren honor of playing Auckland. It would be unwise to throw away the whole of their surplus The only way the trip could be financed was for each of the eighteen players selected to deposit £1 10s towards the expenses. As the Union had never come to the public for donations, he- thought they could do so with the prospect of success for such a purpose. He considered: that £3O could be- obtained by public subscription. Putting tlie .gate down at. £l3, this would give £7o' 10s towards the cost of the trip. The Union, therefore, would only require to find £3O. The Chairman then proposed that a challenge be issued to the Auckland Union, through the New Zealand Rugby Union, for a special challenge match for the Ranfurly Shield. The motion- was seconded by Mr W. Howard.
Mr. E. L. Maude moved as an amendment that before talcing any steps _ re challenging Auckland for the Shield, the Unions which had played special challenge' matches last season he written to, asking them to supply a. statement of the amount, if any, the- had received from the gates for such match. The amendment was negatived. After further discussion, at the instance of Mr. E. L. Maude, it was decided to add to the motion that all members of the Management Committee and club secretaries should canvass the town for subscriptions towards sending a team to Auckland. The motion was carried. Mr. W. Howard offered to donate £5 towards the expenses of the trip. The donation was accepted, and Mr. Howard was thanked for his generosity. With regard to sending a team to Tologa. Bay, it was decided to inform the Tologa Bay Club that no action could be taken in the matter until,it had been' decided whether a team was being sent to Auckland this season or not.
Mr. Alex. Thomson, nurseryman, reported on the cutting of the hedge at Victoria Domain. It; was decided to call for tenders for the work. It was resolved to instruct the caretaker to cut down all wattle trees and briars on Victoria Domain. It was decided, on the motion of Mr. MeCredie, to write to the Borough Council requesting permission to utilise the small reserve at the town end of the Domain. On the motion of the Chairman, it was decided to write to the Hastings Union. asking them to advise What date would 1 be suitable for a match at Gisborne; that the Poverty Bay Union was agreeable to allow the Hastings Union £lO towards expenses, providing the Hastings Union was agreeable to’ allow' the same sum in the case of a return match at Hastings. With regard to the matter of playing a- match on a Saturday at Hasings, the Poverty Bay Union could not make any arrangement. It was decided to write to the Hawke’s Bay Union asking them to supply a date or dates for a match at Gisborne. A letter was received fromi Mr. WT. Parata, secretary of the Maori- team which- is to tour the Dominion this year, asking for 60 per cent of the gross takings for. a match at Gisborne, on. 26th July. . • V.• It was decided to reply offering to give 60 per. cent of the nett proceeds. It was decided to accept Mr Howard’s offer to paint the press-stand- free of charge in return for permission to graze a horse at Victoria Domain. A letter was received from the secretary of the Y.M.P. Club, requesting that the third-grade games in which his club were- engaged should be started not later than 2.30, in order to allow the country members of their third team to catch the afternoon train.
The request was agreed to. The treasurer’s report was submitted and adopted, showing the total receipts for the- week to be £8 19s 6d. The total receipts received for the- season- to date- were £47 8s It was decided to write to the Hockey Association, asking them to- start their first hockey matches at 2 p.m. on Thursdays.
