Another large audience attended His Majesty’s Theatre last evening, wdien the immensely successful -“Grand National” series was submitted for the second time, and was received with energetic ’applause. The large > degree of success attained by the steeplechase film on Saturday evening was in no Avay detracted from last night, when this item was again awarded place of honor. The true description of the race as contained in the picture holds the audience’s interest in a wonderful manner, and one might at times readily imagine oneself actually on the course. This is ably seconded by a depiction entitled “The Queen of Hearts,” containing all the elements of the majestic life dramas enacted on the goldfields. A young man goes to seek his fortune; hut after leaving his beautiful fiancee, meets with ill fortune arid becomes discouraged;. Just at the time wdien the patient girl receives her lover’s letter she is the object of the undesirable attention of an arrogant bank manager who lias Avon poAver over the girl’s father, a farmer, by advancing large sums of money to him. The old farmer beseeches liis daughter to accept the banker in order that he may escape insolvency. Resigning herself to fate the girl accepts aqd the marriage takes place just a feAV minutes before the arrival of her former lover from the West, aVIio has “struck it rich.” The banker and liis bride leave America on a long tour, but they are folloAA’ed by the girl’s lover as far as Monte Carlo, Avhere the hanker becomes intoxicated Avith the gambling fever, and loses almost everything he possesses. He even goes so far as to commit a fraud, and, on his being detected, lie jumps from- a fifth story window to escape the police and is killed. The miner then presents (himself and takes the girl to her old home, Avliere the storv ends Avith tKeir happiness established. The numerous other dramas include “Through the Clouds,” a poAA'erful political drama, and" “The Duke, of Arles” Avhile the comics are especially commendable. The udiole assortment are good, hut “Tontolini at the Bar” Avith its great variety of facial contortion, must he given pride of place. This programme Avill be repeated this evening.
