SALT-EATING TURNS YOU WHITE. GERMAN PROFESSOR’S THEORY. Dr A. Bergfeld, a German professor, has written a book in which he tells us why the Caucasian is white, tlie negro black, and the Indian red. He declares that color, is simply a matter of feeding. In the animal and insect world color is often determined by food, and Dr. Bergfeld says that by chemical process -file . same -results are -shown in the different. humaiir races.' , According to-Dr, Bergfeld the tpriginalnian was black, ‘as- his diet must* have been vegetarian." Fruit and vegetables, contain manganatea- -which ally themselves with iron, making a dark brown combination. Dr Bergfeld sal's that negroes who - add meat and milk to their vegetable fare are never as dark as those who only cat vegetsbl6S Indians are red because they have absorbed for generations haemoglobin, the red substance in the blood of animals killed for food. Mongols are yellow because they descend from dark, fruit-eating races who penetrated into the plains of Asia, became shepherds, and lived to a great extent on milk, which contains chlorine and lias a bleaching effect. Another branch, the Caucasians, became whiter still because they added salt to their dietary. It is a wellknown fact that common salt is a strong chloride and a powerful agent in bleaching the skin. The effect, Dr. Bergfeld declares, can be seen on, negro children who have been brousrhr up on a white dietary. Tliev are never as black as their kindred who have not abandoned vegetarianism. _ •
