THE LIGHT-WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. WOLGAST DEFEATS BURNS. The battle between Wolgast, the holder, and Frankie Burns for the lightweight championship of. the world took place at San Francisco on May 29th. Before entering the ring Wolgast backed himself heavily. He placed 6200 dollars in the poor boxes as to the final result, and also wagered heavily that Burns would not be on his feet at the end of the eighteenth round. Tflie) weatheii tcondlitionsl were perfect. At 2 p.m. there was standing room only. Long before that hour the gallery and tiers were congested, the overflow spreading to the aisles. Wolgast entered, the ring at four minutes past 3, andi Burns three minutes later. Both had great receptions. The dhampion had a shade the better of the first round. In* the second Burns sent a left and right to the face, which almost floored Wolgast, but towards the end) of the round the challenger seemed to tire, and bled profusely. The third, fourth, and.* fifth rounds were all Wolgast’s, but the sixth was pretty even, though Burns was a terrible sight when he went to .his corner. Wolgast was also bleeding from the mouth, and did not look too fresh. In the seventh the champion landed a frightful right upper-cut to the nose. Burns, 'however, rallied in the ninth, and matters were fairly even in the next round, till just before the hell, when Wolgast drove two heavy rights to the head, staggering Burns badly. Burns fought back well in the eleventh, but in each succeeding round he became palpably weaker. Wolgast expected; to win. with a knock-out', but it was not. until the eighteenth round had arrived that Burns, being unable to toe the mark, threw up the sponge. Wolgast was then declared the winner.
