ATTEMPT TO CAPTURE DIAZ.
HIS TRAIN WAYLAID.
BRISK FIGHT WITH REBELS
Ex-President Diaz had an exciting experience while being escorted from Mexico to Vera Cruz, the chief Mexican port, whence he intended to take his departure for Spain. The bodyguard with which the late' President had been provided was a fairly strong one, and it was well for him that it was, for the train by'which he was travelling had not gone far on its journey when it was attacked by a large force of rebels. A brisk engagement ensued, during which Senor Diaz quitted the train. and actively set about directing operations. The' insurrectos were eventually beaten off, leaving thirty of their number dead. There is little doubt that the attack was the outcome of a carefully laid plan for the capture of the ex-President, and it is hard to say what his' fate might have been had he fallen into the hands of the rebels.
