THE BOROUGH ABATTOIRS.

SATISFACTORY REPORT FROM THE MANAGER.

At the meeting of the Borough Council last night, the abattoirs manager reported that during May 250 cattle, 1270 sheep, 65 lambs, 6 calves, and 106 pigs were slaughtered. The pithing pen was not working satisfactorily, but before it underwent the necessary repairs he would recommend that permission. be obtained from the Director of Live Stock and Meat Department of Agriculture to reduce the size. He had from time to time visited the premises of the different, purveyors of meat within the abattoir area, and with the exception of one establishment, the proprietorship of which had since changed hands, the owners had been ready to adopt his recommendations or instructions, and their premises have on the whole been kept in a clean and satisfactory manner. During .Tune 174 cows, 76 bullocks or heifers, 6. calves, 1270 sheep, 65 lambs, and 106 pigs were handled. On the motion of the Acting-Mayor it was decided to make application to the Agricultural Department for permission to alter the pithing plant as recommended.

Cr. Pettie stated that it was very satisfactory to find that the purveyors of meat in the borough were carrying on their business in such an excellent manner.

At a later stage Cr. Collins, in accordance with notice of motion, moved that the abattoir fees be rescinded, with a view to having the fees increased. The motion was formally seconded by Cr. Darien.

The motion was carried, and Cr. Collins. then gave notice of motion that the abattoir fees be increased at next meeting. Cr. Pettie moved that the Abattoirs Committee be asked to furnish a- report at next Council m e<r : - on all improvements and alterations required at the abattoirs. The motion was earned.
