THE COAST ROADS.

IN A BAD CONDITION

It is reported that the Coast roads are in a bad state and the Puatae rocks are worse than they have been for years. Five years ago a, road was constructed to avoid tlie Puatea rocks in winter time, but it is really blocked for traffic at this time of year when it is most needed and the seas continue heavy. Most of the approaches to the culverts and bridges are also in a very bad state, having in. many cases a rise of one foot from the road. - Only last week Messrs Redstone and Son’s mail coaches were delayed for five or six hours on account of the big slip there. Then again a party driving a buggy and pair down last week had a narrow escape, of being drowned at this Puatae slip, the horses being almost bogged when the tide was barely half way in. It is understood that the deviation will ho closed for at least another two weeks, but the Cook County Council will make an effort to open it as soon as possible.
