CONFERENCE OF IRONMASTERS.

DEPUTATION TO MINISTER OF

CUSTOMS

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.J

WELLINGTON, June 14. A conference of ironmasters was held here to-day to discuss the question of imposing a duty of 33 1-3 per on such articles as can be made in New Zealand. It was reported that since the conference was held in Dunedin last February information had been gathered from different sources, and it was hoped the Government would grant the request. One speaker urged that the only way to do anything was by howling and howling continuously. It was no use going to the Government. A deputation would be politely received, and told that the matter would be looked into, but nothing would be done. Ultimately a resolution was adopted deciding to accept the assistance of the labor unions in a. joint effort to obtain adequate protection of the industry. Subsequently a deputation waited on tlie Minister of Customs, who said it wo ltd be practically impossible to deal with the tariff question in -file coming session. Amongst other suggestions made by the Minister was the placing of the iron industry under the Commercial'Trusts ACT.
