Local and General.

A pleasant entertainment arranged for this evening is the Alhambra Club’s social, to be held in His Majesty’s Theatre in aid! of the funds of the cricket club. First-class music will be provided by Miss Lang’s orchestra, and the catering is in the hands of Mr. S. Wcotton. A large attendance and ■< most enjoyable function are anticinated.

A very enjoyable evening was spent at the Temperance Association’s weekly meetin-r in Robb’s Hall last evening. There was a large attendance. The Past President, Bro. Lancaster, entertained .the members, items being given by Sisters Russell, Field, Smale, Allen and Jameson, and Bros. Hastie, Brown, Vowles, Merlyn Kearney, and Penwick.

A masquerade ball was held at the Makaraka and Matawhero Hall lastevening. There were about a hundied couples present, and all were in fancy costumes. The music was supplied by Messrs Kirk Bros., and the floor was in excellent order.

A cable mess-age from Melbourne states that the Sheffield Choir will leave there for New Zealand on Wednesday next.

“Ministers of the Crown and members of Parliament are all very well.” remarked a speaker at the opening of the Rahotu Post Office, “but where would they be if it was not for our poci old cows?”

It was suggested at the Magistrate’s Court at Masterton that instead of liquor being destroyed in sly grog cases it should he confiscated and given to the Old Men’s Home or to the Hospital. Rahil, closes at 4 o’clock this afternoon.

The usual weekly parade of Gisborne Rifles is to be held in the Garrison Hall this evening. Final arrangements in connection witli the Goroi.ation celebrations are to, be made, and the Captain notifies that every member must attend the parade. The rifle brigade section of the Overseas Club will hold its first meeting on Monday next, when an executive will be chosen and rules formulated. The movement is being enthusiastically taken up and a gratifying feature is the number of “old who are coming forward, fully tliree-fourths of the signatures already to hand are those of men with previous service, whilst for the novices Mr E. H. Barber, late instructor for the Otago Board of Education and certificate captain in mounted infantry and rifle work has kindly volunteered his services as instructor. Hr. Porter has also offered himself as Medical Examiner for the Club free of charge. The Overseas Rifle Club is starting under the most favorable auspices.

A family of Yymondbam, Norfolk, named Rudling has been responsible for the blowing of the church organ for a century. Mr. Thomas Rudling, aged seventy-three, the deputy parish clerk, who has just been presented witli a purse of gold by the, townspeople on his retirement, was organ blower for forty years. Ho succeeded his grandfather, who was organ-blower for sixty years. Mr Thomas Rudliiig’s father was verger in the same church for thir-ty-five years.
