GOLD DREDCING.

ACTION BY MINES DEPARTMENT

The Mines Department has (says the Grcymouth. “Star”) done the district- a good service bv sending a keystone borer for use under liberal terms through the Westland County Council. .The machine arrived at Kumava on luesday for transport to the Tereinakau River, where it is to be used in a prospecting proposition for dredging purposes. The syndicate, which has this special matter in hand., propose, if the prospects are encouraging, to put- on a large and powerful steel dredge capable of treating 25,000 to 30,000 cubic yards a week, so that the success of the venture means a very healthy revival of the dredging industry. The Mines Department is giving the free use of the machine. That is, the borer, the latest and best type from America, is supplied free of cost, and all the hirer has to pav is £4 a week, the salary of the competent engineer whom the Government appoint in charge of the machine.
