PARALYTIC WALKS WHILE HYPNOTISED.
INFLUENCE OF STRANGE POWER
Seven doctors and a circle of nurses at St. Mark’s Hospital, New York, recently watched Dr. Alfred J. Fox demonstrate one of the miracles of modern science when he commanded a paralytic to walk under the influence of hypnotism and was obeyed. For three years the man had been unable to move himself.
“Now,” began the doctor, “you are going to move your feet. Move your feet up and down. You have control of them.” Melclioir Luysterborg, who couldn’t do any such thing for three years, began to wiggle his hitherto helpless feet. “Now, you will notice that your legs are getting warm; are going to perspire.” The suggestion almost instantly brought a glow. “You can stand up ; you can walk. Of course, you will have to lean on these doctors, but yoii can walk.” The great form raised itself and got up from the table. Leaning on two doctors, the big man went slowly around the room. Then he returned to the table and the hypnotic influence was removed. The man immediately sat up and said: “I want to walk.”
His effort this time was better than on previous occasions.
