SHIPOWNERS IN CONFERENCE.
RECOGNITION OF UNIONS OPPOSED.
THE MENS’ ULTIMATUM.
“DRASTIC ACTION WILL BE TAKEN.”
(Received June 29, 10.50 p.m.) LONDON, June 29.
A conference of one hundred shipowners in the United Kingdom decided that a moderate increase in wages might be given at certain ports, in view of the present trade conditions. They recommended the Shipowners’ Association to fix standard wages for respective districts, and advised the Shipping Federation to extend its functions to cover wages disputes.
It was unanimously decided to oppose the recognition of Sailors’ or Firemen’s Unions.
The National Transport Workers’ Federation during a conference resolved to adopt drastic action against the shipping firms unless the strike terminates on Saturdav.
