northern union game
ADVANCING IN POPULARITY IN NEW ZEALAND.
Chatting with an interviewer m Sydney, Mr Phelan, pne of the managers of the N.Z. League team now in Australia. said that very rapid progress with the Northern Union game had been made recently in New Zealand, especially in the North Island. During t)li<2 season 18 now clubs had. boon xoimed, and the only obstacles to progress were money and grounds. The New Zealand Rugby Union had 1 both grounds and money, but the promoters of the Northern Union game expected to get both before long. The majority of the men brought over liad been playing thenew' game for two years, and the others had recently come into it, and proved themselves nippy and clever. The trip had been arranged on purely business lines, apart from the sporting side of. it, and the public would find the men improve with each match they engaged 1 '"lt is not true,” said Mr Phelan, "that any of the men have had a promise that they will he picked to go /to England with the Australasian team. They all know very well that their chances of inclusion are entirely subject to their play here.” Continuing, Mr Phelan said, "There is one thing we wish to make clear, and that is that our men are amateurs'. Me have paid no Large sums of money to induce men to leave the Rugby Union for the Northern Union game. There were astonishingly high prices paid in New South "Wales to some men. I heard •that as much as £2OO was paid to one man. We do not do anything like that. "Under rule 2-3 of our constitution,” said Mr Powell, "we can only pay players for loss of time while playing or on tour at a rate not" exceeding 10s a day, in addition to travelling expenses, and no player can receive~any more or any less than any other player in the same team. Our men are all on the one footing.”
