[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT. (Received Jul 3, 12.10 a.m.) NEW YORK, July 1. The Erie mail train was held up by twelve armed and masked men.
The mail express cars were rifled, and the mail clerk v and conductor were both shot, the former fatally. The robbers tied telegraph poles across the track and stopped the train. Many passengers alighted, thinking a collision had occurred, but stampeded back aboard the train when the robbers fired upon them.
