FRUSTRATED BY A POSTMAN

Undoubtedly smart, though it Avas frustrated by the postman, ay as the* attempt made by Karl Kroner, a German hairdresser, avlio Avorked at Herne Hill, to obtain Ll2 10s by a forged betting trick. He pleaded guilty to tlie charge at the Old Bailey. In the same street, counsel explained, was a bookmaker, with whom Kroner opened a letting account. In April Kroner posted a letter to 1 himself, the address on the env'elope being written in pencil. Having rubbed out the address, he had in his possession a genuine envelope, bearing a date stamp prior to the starting of a particular race. When the result of that race was known he put a slip into the envelope, making a bet on the horse that Avon. He told the postman that he had made a* mistake in leaving the letter with him; it should have been delivered to the house of the bookmaker. But the postman was sharp enough not to be taken in. ff Kroner had succeeded in his attempt he Avould have been entitled to £l2 10s.

His employer promised to assist him to go back to Germany, and the* Recorder said 1 he should be released if satisfactory arrangements Avere made for his return.
