Steady rain commenced to fall here yesterday afternoon, and 1 has practically continued ever since without a stop. A large area of low-lying country is already under water, and the rivers are rising rapidly. The rain will melt the snow on the ranges, and if the downpour continues a ..big stretch of country will be flooded.

Information was received at'2 o’clock of a serio-us landslide at Eketahuna. The' Masterton-Alfredton road is completely blocked, also the railway line. All trains have been suspended. The mail train is . unable to get through. Heavy rain is still falling, and the rivers are rapidly rising.

RIVERS HIGH AT PALMERSTON. WASH-OUT ON THE RAILWAY. PALMERSTON N., July 10. Heavy rain has fallen throughout yesterday and to-day, and in consequence all the rivers have risen. The Tokomaru river is said to be higher than it has 'been for many years, while the Pohangina and Oroua are also in high flood. The Manawatu river is running bank high, and reports from Ashhurst state that it is still rising. The road between Ashhurst and Palmerston North is under water.

A washout occurred on the railway line near Maharahara, between Dannevirke and Woodville, and as a consequence the goods train from Palmerston North to Hawke’s Bay was held, up at the wash-out at the Woodville. side, and the passengers on that train and also on the evening train from Waipukurau to Palmerston, had to cross the washout, each train returning from whence it came. HEAVY RAIN AT WANGANUI. WANGANUI, July 10. Heavy rain, fell steadily from early morning till about three o’clock this afternoon. The river is running high, but no damage has been done.
