According to Mr "W • D. S. MacDonald, M.P., the whole question in regard to Native' lands is now practically solved. The member for the Bay of Plenty told the electors of Motu on Monday evening that the Native lands were being thrown open for settlement much more rapidly than was generally supposed Out of 6,037,128 acres held by Natives as at March 31st, 1910 , 3,232,676 was in Maori occupation, leaving a balance of 2,804,452 acres, which area, he averred was now being dealt with. For some time, he said. 70 survey staffs employing about 300 persons, had been engaged upon survey work. He was convinced that the settlement of Native lands will go on as quickly as the surveying and roading would permit. It was his opinion that under the Native' Townships Act it should have been made compulsory for the Government to purchase prior to the expirv of the first- twentyone years’ lease. Only in very exceptional cases would any private individual be able to purchase a section owing to tjie difficulty of P ar ~ tition.
