Cr. Darton: You don’t call that squeaking thing a success, do yoh ? The Mayor : There might be defects in your voice in it, Cr. Darton. (Laughter.) The Mayor then proceeded to reply, dealing with the points raised by Cr. Darton. 'He contended that there would be no necessity to strengthen the bridges, although the Whataupoko bridge might have to be widened at a comparatively small cost. The motion was then carried, Cr. Darton being the only dissentient. “If you have done a wrong thing,” remarked the Mayor, “I will be prepared to accept the responsibility for it.” Some discussion then took place, on the question of the gauge of the line, the Mayor advocating 3ft. 6in.. gauge. Subsequently the Mayor, with Cr. Brown and the Engineer, were appointed to go through the specifications and to sign the contract.
