WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY.

A RECORD CLAIMED. What is claimed to be an AustraL ian record in wireless telegraphy lias been accomplished by the A.U.S.N. Co.’s steamer Levuka, 2200 miles of ocean being effectively covered by the operation.' On her last voyage from Fiji the Levuka, whilst nearing Melbourne, experimented with a, view of getting in touch with Suva land station. Several messages were flashed into space, but they brought no response from Fiji, and the attempt was abandondoned, the operator .believing the. distance too great to bridge. On arriving in Shva again on this voyage, however, the “wireless” authorities there hastened to congratulate those on board the steamer on their marvellous achievement. Every message sent by the Levuka was re-read on board. The messages had been caught, but the Fiji installation had Tailed in its efforts to effectively reply over the same distance. The officers of the Levuka now claim that that steamer holds pre-eminence for wireless communication over any vessel in, or visiting, Australian waters Their instalment (Telefunken system, which has been, adopted by the Commonwealth, Government) is similar to that supplied to the steamers Ulimaroa and Riverina, hut the radius of those vessels npj to now has been only 1100 miles, or half that covered by the Levuka. On another occasion the Levuka had “spoken” effectively over 1760 miles, or between Noumea and Sydney.
