CONTINENTAL MEAT MARKET.
OUB CHANGE WITH GERMANY.
‘ The secretary of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce lias received a letter from Sir William Hall-Jones, High Commissioner for New Zealand in London, on the subject of the possibility of obtaining a market in Germany for our frozen meat. The following is portion of the letter: “I hope to discuss the matter with the Prime Minister while he is in this country. The subject of the importation of frozen meat to Continental countries and America has been engaging the attention of the High Commissioner’s Department for many years, and the Government in Wellington have been kept au eourant .with all’developments. Deports have, from time to time, been issued by the Agricultural Department, which no doubt have come under the notice of your cliamber. I have caused inquiry to be made regarding the conditions governing the importation of frozen meat into all European countries and America, and have kept in touch with every alteration made in these regulations. The results have been duly reported to the Government, who are thus in possession of full information on the subject. As regards Germany, my inquiries lead me to conclude that that country will be the last to make any concession, and it will be very difficult to overcome the. objections against frozen meat on the part of the Government. The regulations require carcases to he imported whole, and all the internal organs must be present in their natural state of attachment. The duty is mk. 45 per 1000 kilos. In the case of France, there are indications that the importations of frozen meat may eventually be permitted, as a certain section of the people have expressed a desire for cheaper food. In my opinion, France is likely to prove our best market, and I am giving due attention to this in connection with my negotiations."
