RE-OPENED BY LORD ISLINGTON. IPEB PEESS ASSOCIATION. 1 AUCKLAND, July 22. The Governor, speaking at the ceremony of the re-opening of the Auckland Savings Bank, remodelled at a cost of £6OOO, paid a high tribute to the publicspirited men who nurtured the institution through a period' of adversity to the present proud l position of prosperity with 45,776 depositors, and deposits of £1,202,091. Of all the enactments of last century, of all the beneficent institutions, none contributed more potent influence to the national character and personal happiness and contentment than the savings bank. He spoke of the importance of the institution in encouraging thrift, especially arimng the industrial classes. The economic conditions of New Zealand and the rate of wages were higher than in the older countries, hut the cost of living was unutterably and . remorselessly higher., Therefore it was important for workers to be encouraged to provide for a time when they no longer, had the power.! o earn money, yet had to provide for old age.'> ' A : 'v: ;l- : \
