Before the business of the Council was proceeded with last evening, a resolution was carried expressing sympathy with the Mayor and Ins faxmlv m their recent sad bereavement. . Cr. lettie in moving the motion, pointed out that Mr W. Dean Lysnar was an old resident of the district, and die thought that it would be very fitting if the Council passed the resolution. . Darton seconded the motion. tq e Mayor thanked the Council for their kindness in passing the resolution. An interesting lecture on hfe_and customs in the mission field of V est ‘ Africa was delivered by Miss A. Wilson in Holy Trinity Schoolroom last evenin" The lecture was illustrated by a number of limelight views shown with the aid of a strong oxy-hydrogen lantern, which was manipulated by tne Rev. L Dawson Thomas. The Rev. F. W. Chatterton presided, and wiioated at the piano. Miss Wilson leaves for Auckland this morning.
There will be a pairs towing race at the skating rink to-night. A gentleman tows liis lady partner, who does not use any exertion -to help him, merely holdin" the short attached cord. The rink will be open this afternoon also. The f 01 1 nightlv meeting of the H.A.C.B.S. was held last evening m St. Mary’s Hall. There were a large number of brethren present to take part in the installation of officers, which was carried out by the Past President, Bro J. W. B rod ley. The ledge met m mourning on account of the recent death of Bro. Dan. Barry’s wife. A vote of sympathy was passed by the meetir." and it was decided to forward Bro. Barry a letter of condolence in his sad bereavement. After the installation of officers the meeting adjourned out of respect to the memory of the deceased lady.

Among the business to have been dealt with at the meeting of the Boroughl Council last night, but- winch had not been reached by the tune the adjournment took place, was a report upon the restaurants, etc., ot the town by the Sanitary Inspector. With three exceptions the reports, it is understood, are of a quite satisfactory nature. As regards one establishment it is allogeu that considerable improvements might be'made, both as to premises and appliances.' Unsatisfactory conditions are also alleged in connection with a fish establishment. The most severe allegations. however, are made in regard to another eating establishment which is thus described: “Also uusatisfactorv. The room in which the food stuffs are kept is old and badly ventilated, and not suitable for the purpose for which it is being used. I recommend that the place be condemned.” The report will be considered at the adjourned meeting of the 'Council to-night. The Ormond Gun Club fired a match yesterday for the trophy presented by Messrs L. D. Nathan and Co. Messrs W. Parsons and W. Neenan tied for first place. Both killed two birds in the shoot off, the latter winning on first barrell results. The Rev. Father Dignan, Messrs F. McKenzie and W. Parle killed 5 birds each, Messrs C. Bollen and Weston 4 kills, H. Oroxton 3 kills and D. Neenan I kill. A sweepstake was afterwards shot for and was won by Neenan. At the meeting of the Borough Council last night, the Borough building and electric by-laws were confirmed, on the motion of the Mayor. While driving to Pakarao yesterday Miss Shaw had a rather unpleasant experience. When about half-way uetween Tapuae and l Mr Biddle's property a large wave capsized the buggy. Miss Shaw was thrown out, but fortunately she was not injured. The buggy was washed away, though the horses managed to get free, and the last that was seen of it was the toils of the wheels in the surf. Miss S’liaw made her way to Pakarao with the horses.

Borough Council last night. “I graduated in a good school — the Gisborne Borough Council,” he i.-ro-ceeded, “and consider I had two eminent teachers in yourself andl Cr. Harris.”
An adjourned meeting of the committee of the Poverty Bay Turf Club was held yesterday afternoon, Mr J. W. Nolan presiding. The following officers were appointed:—Hon. treasurer, Mr L. T. oymes ; liandicapper, Mr H. Coyle; judge, Mr W. G. Sherratt; clerk of scales, Mr M. DcCosta; totalisator steward, Mr W. 0. 'Skeet; ground committee, Messrs A. Dewing, R. Sherratt, and J. Maynard; programme committee, Messrs J. W. Nolan, J. Maynard and J. A. Caesar; auditors, Messrs H. E. Maude and F. Parker. Eight new members were elected. The appointment of a starter was left open. A letter was received from Mr A. -Pritchard, resigning his position as clerk of the course on account of illness. It was resolved to write to him, expressing regret at the cause necessitating his resignation. Mr P. Walsh was appointed to the office.
Unusual interest was manifested in the meeting of the Borough Council last evening, and an attendance of upwards of fifty ’ ratpeayers listened attentively to the"debate on the water supply question until close on 1 a.m. this morning. Among the ratepayers present were a large number of master plumbers, who were interested in the decision of the Council with regard to the installation of the sewerage connections. On account of the growing importance of the Te Knr aka district the authorities of the Bank of Australasia have decided to open a receiving office in that township, a fact which will no doubt he noted with much satisfaction by the clients of the institution. "One of the strongest arguments m favor of the establishment of a museum in the district is the presence of the Straker waggon,” was a remark passed at the Borough Council last night.
