MISHAP AT NAPIER.

HAUROTO CRASHES INTO WHARF.

SUFFERS EXTENSIVE* DAMAGE.

NO STEAMER FOR AUCKLAND THIS MORNING.

[PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION. J * NAPIER, July 26

As the steamer Hauroto was coming alongside the Glasgow wharf about 5.30 this evening, she .ran into the end of the wharf stem on, cutting through the 10ft timber hay; and about 4ft. of the concrete wharf beyond it. The rent in the wharf is approximately* 14ft. long, and is the same width as at the entrance.

The damage to the wharf is considerable, and the steamer is also considerably damaged! ati the how, a few feet above the waterline. The stem is badly dented, in, and the steel plates are open for a distance of about seven feet from the front.

Tlie harbormaster was in charge at the time.

Mr J. W. J. Preston, tlie local manager for the Union Steam Ship Coy., when the subject matter of the above telegram was referred to him, informed a “Times” reporter that Qie had also received a. telegram giving practically similar particulars. The damage, he stated, appeared to be fairly extensive, and of course would preclude the possibility of the vessel resuming her voyage for Gisborne and Auckland. This means that there will be no steamer leaving Gisborne for Auckland this morning, and; probably there may be no connection until the usual steamer on Wednesday morning. Tlie future movements of the Hauroto are uncertain, pending the necessary repairs, but strong efforts are being made by the Company to resume the East Coast service with as little delay as possible. At the time of the disaster the Harbormaster at Napier was in charge of the vessel, Capt. Vint, late of the s.s. Waitemata, who has taken over tlie Hauroto, being unfamiliar with the port.
