ENTERTAINMENTS.
PATHE PICTURES
The films comprising the special week end change of programme, which was to have been shown on Saturday, being on board 1 the Hauroto, wliich met with a mishap at Napier, did not arrive here on that day. They will, however, be shown this evening, and merriment being the signal feature of the programme it should provide an excellent evening’s entertainment. A comedy entitled ‘‘A Queen for a Day” is averred to be the star item of the series, in which various scenes are cleverly arranged, and the picture ranks high in the world of cinematography. In another item the onlooker is shown the world-famous Crystal Palace, and the views are taken from many points of vantage. The Vitagraph Company are responsible for an excellent dramatic film ‘/Francesca di Riwini,” which is an Italian love story of a most passionate nature. “The Test” is another strong drama, and still another of this class is one entitled “A Miraculous Recovery.” Among many others “Her First Appearance” and “Foolshead’s Presents” will no doubt be acknowledged fine comic subjects. THE SKATING CARNIVAL. The curiosity and anticipation aroused over the fancy dress and poster skating carnival will be gratified tonight, when the Roller Skating Company open their doors for the first night of their big annual event. That the hall will be packed with eager people from town and country, goes without saying, and that they will be charmed with the exhibition is also assured. All carnivals are fascinating, but a carnival in which the participants move with grace and swiftness oh rollers, attired in charming costumes or amusing comedy dresses, is attractive to the public. The programme of events published in another column, shows that a most interesting and attractive four nights’ entertainment will be provided, and besides the main events advertised there will be various other events nightly of an interesting and amusing character. The posters and fancy costumes are said to be most unique and even astonishing in their variety and cleverness, and much interest centres in the best advertising poster and best fancy costumes for both ladies and gentlemen especially. The animal costumes and comic character get ups are said to be most ludicrous, and to the younger generation especially these should provide keen enjoyment. On account of the final preparations and decorating there will ue no skating in the hall this morning or afternoon, and as there is bound to be a crush at the doors patrons are asked to procure tickets as much as possible from the day sales offices or the rink. Ample seating accommodation is being provided, and hot or cold refreshments can be procured at the rink tea rooms. Skaters are requested to be early at the rink, for the purpose of making-up, special rooms for which are provided. The judges at the skating carnival, starting to-night, are Mesdames James Blair, A. .G. Beere. and Hardwicke Smith, and Dr. Collins, Captain Hellier Evans, Messrs Zachariah and Paltl'idge.
