THE KING AND COSTERS.
KINDLY INVITATION TO LUNCHEON AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE.
As showing 'how practically every class has been personally considered by His Majesty during the Coronation rejoicings, it has become known that among the guests who have been entertained were representatives of- the costermonger community. His Majesty invited 'Councillor A. Valentine (president of the Whitechapel and Spitalfields Costermongers’ and Street Sellers’ Union) and Mr. John Raphael (bon. secretary of that body), as representatives of the costers and street-sellers, to view the Coronation procession from seats in the Royal household stand, Constitution Hill. The letter from the King’s private secretary, conveying the invitation, was in particularly kind 1 and cordial tones. On the eve of Coronation Day, Sir Arthur Bigge sent a telegram asking the little party to come into Buckingham for refreshments when the procession had dispersed. One of the Royal servants went to the stand and conducted the visitors across the quadrangle to the Palace door. They were welcomed by a member of the staff of tlie Master of the Household, and were taken to a room where a table was Laid for lunch for them alone. Tlie iofficer of the household personally superintended the attention of the waiter, and put the King’s guests completely at their ease. Their stay in the Palace exceeded an hour. There is reason for stating that all this was done on the personal instructions of the King.
