WELLINGTON, August 16. A statement regarding the expiration of Sir Win. Hall-Jones’ term as High Commissioner, from the London correspondent of the “Wellington Evening Post”, is published in this evening’s issue of that journal. The letter, which is dated July 7th, states that it is taken for granted that the permanent appointment of a successor to Sir Wm. Hall-Jones will not be made until after the general election. Long before that Sir William hopes to be back in New Zealand, and the correspondent understands that Lord Plunket has been requested to, and has agreed, to fill the office from’ the time of Sir William’s departure until the arrival of his successor. When questioned on the matter this evening the Acting Prime Minister (Sir James Carroll) stated that so far as he knew, no temporary appointment to the position, beyond Hie extension of Sir Wm, Hall-Jone’s term, bad been made. The selection of a successor to Sir William was a matter for the Government, and it had certainly taken no action in the direction indicated. If any temporary arrangement had been made in London .the Government would have been, advised by the. High Commissioner, and it had not received any communication on the subject.
