PROPOSED LIGHT RAILWAY.
j te karaka to waiapu valley. I MINISTER CANNOT ENTERTAIN SUGGESTION. The Minister of Public Works, according to a communication received by the Cook County Council yesterday, does not view the proposal for the Te Karaka-Waiapu railway with favor. Mr H. J. Blow, Under-Secretary for Public Works, wrote stating that the Council suggested tlmt the .Government should make a survey of the route: for a light branch railway from Te Karaka to a point in the Waiapu Valley. The Minister had made inquiries'as promised and was advised that the country to be traversed by the suggested line was unfavorable for railway construction, and the survey alone would be a costly uni dertaking, involving an expenditure of about £SOOO before sufficient information could be obtained to locate a route to the point mentioned in the Council’s 1 'otter. Under the circumstances the ; Minister regretted that he was unable to see his way to give the Council’s *res quest favorable consideration. The letter was received.
