Perhaps it was on account of the rare privilege of having tea at a man’s club that attracted such a large numher of charmingly dressed women to the Gisborne Club’s “at home” on Thursday, in spite of the dull afternoon those present appeared in honor of the occasion in. their prettiest frocks. The members of the Club were assjdious in their attention to make their lady visitors feel quite at home, in such a man’s den, on this especial occasion. Among others noticed were : Mrs Horald Bright, black cloth costumes, black hat feather, with swathing of pale blue and black. Mrs M. Poster, grey checked costume, and black turban l toque. Mrs Branson, prune colored velvet, black picture hat. Mrs Arlidge, white serge costume, ■ black velvet toque. Miss Gwen Pyke, pastel blue frock, trimmed with black braid and black buttons, hat turned off the face of -.light blue. " ' ’ Mrs J. Blair, black gown • black tpqne- . .. Miss £5... Evans, light blue costume, ■'black picture hat. - r -> Mrs S. Spragg' (Wellington), navy, blue costume . black toque. Mrs C. Spragg, French tweed costume, hat en-suite. Miss Smith, dead rose cloth costume, much trimmed with black, -closely fitting black toque with osprey. Miss Holland (Dunedin), bright blue costume, velvet toque in same shade. Miss L. Coleman, white serge costume, black velvet toque. Miss B. Murray, bright blue frock trimmed with black, blue hat with black mount.
Mrs C. Adair, cream serge costume with black buttons, black seal stole and muff, and black satin hat. Mrs Leonard Clark, cream costume, purple hat with mauve violets. Miss Jensen, navy blue costume, black and white straw hat.
Mrs Kyme, purple gown much braided, mole toque with steel trimming. Mrs T. Adams, pale blue shantung frock, black satin hat with pink roses. Mrs H. Barton, vieux rose costume,' black picture hat. Mrs de Costa, pastel pink costume, black satin hat. Mrs Ed. Chrisp, navy blue costume, black velvet toque. Miss B. Graham, tweed costume, black hat with ■wreath of blue flowers. Miss I. Chrisp, navy blue costume, cream straw “Gibbs” toque. Mrs W. Johnstone, grey cloth gown, grey satin hat with pink roses. Mrs R. Crawford, light green tweed costume, mob toque of black velvet.

Chrisp, and many others. : In the evening the members of the ■ Gisborne Club gave a “theatre party” : and the programme submitted sent many home with the Oliver Twist void. Mrs S. Spragg, who has been visiting I.Mr and Mrs C. Spragcr. returns to Wellington by to-morrow’s steamer. • Mr,. and- Mrs Carlyon are visiting Auckland. 1 Mr and Mrs C. Thomas are back from Christchurch. Misses Graham and Chrisp have returned from their visit South: j- Mr Arthur Hutchinson left* on. Wednesday en route to London. Mesdames Murphy and R. Scott are back from Christchurch. Mrs Brassey, who has been the guest 3f Mrs G. Maclean, has returned to Auckland. Mr and Mrs Balfour are visiting the south. Mr. and Mrs Richard Barker remain n England for the next twelve months. They spent the first part of their stay yLth Mrs Barker’s mother at Carnolea, a Ireland, and shortly leave on a motor our through Great Britain. Later they pend some time on the Continent, and jo on from there -to the Holy Land and igypt. Mr. W. J. Little, of Gisborne, before eturning to New Zealand, via Canada nd the States, intends to do some luring in Franco. H A woman has been appointed inspecjr of boarded-out children —a position lat, it was urged at the Women’s on gross last July, at the White City, ught always to be held by women—--7 the Willesden Board of Guardians cently.
The Ealing Borough Council has apjinted a woman, Mrs Copeland, as firth sanitary inspector.
