The City Band 1 will march from the post office to the Garrison Hall prior to tine ,boxing carnival to-night and tomorrow night..

A highly successful euchre party and dance was held in St. Mary’s Schoolroom. last evening, when there was a, verv large attendance. The euchre tournament fer prizes donated by Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Houlihan, occupied tlie early portion, of tlie evening, and tlic winners were as follows: Ladies, first Miss Ashman; second, Mrs. E. D. Smith : gentlemen—first, Mr. Fitzger- • second, Mr. Rea. A feature of the vocal items was the singing of Madam nipnxm vyho rendered in charming manner "Daddy” and "Idle Words.” A duet was sung by Mrs. Hennessy and Mr Kimptom, and tlie latter also contributed a, solo. Mr. Marshall gave a mandolin solo, and the Messrs Vita Bros rendered several enjoyable selection./ besides providing the mnsje for the dancing, which was continued until an early hour this morning. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies.

During the lasi fortnight fifty chains of sewerage pipes have been laid in the borough- The construction of fourteen chains of house connections, two rnanfm'es and eight inspection pits, was also completed during the period mentioned.

The annual race meeting of the Poverty Bay Hunt Club wilt be held on the Park Racecourse to-morrow, and judging by the splendid programme that has been arranged, the fixture should be a decided success. Tlie first race is timed to start at 1.30 p.m... and the last event at 4 p.m. A special train service has been arranged leaving tlie station at 1.10 p.m. for tlie racecourse and'returning at 4.10 p.m.

Webb stated that, the Ivaiti beach shingle, which was inspected before being used, was infinitely preferable to the screening* now obtainable from the quarry, and cost 6s 6d a. yard less. The motion was defeated bv five votes to two, Crs. Dart-on and Collins alone voting for the motion, though the latter stated he was opposed to it. and bad onlv socit pro forma to permit of discussion.

The practice of holding so many committee meetings in the dav time was complained about by Cr. Dartou at the meeting, of the Borough Council last night. He stated that it was a severe handicap to Councillors like himself who bad their work to attend to. and he hoped that the now Afayor would discontinue the practice, and only hold eonimitte meetings in -the dav time when absolutely necessary. Tlie Alayor replied that be intended to rearrange the constitution of the committees, so as to divide the work, and make the duties as light as possible for Councillors. Cr. Darton stated that now party politics had been done away with there would not be the same necessity for so many Councillors being on the various committees.

After a. lengthy discussion the motion to rescind the resolution was carried the Mayor and Crs. Webb, Collins. Barton and Wade voting for, and Crs. Brown and Sawyer against. A committee, consisting of the Mayor and Crs. Colhns, Darton, and Wade were appointed to confer with the labor delegates and report to the Council.

A now series of pictures will be screened at His Majesty’s Theatre this evening, and the star attraction is said to be a wonderful story of life beneath the sea entitled “The Diver.”

Her disappearance was reported to the police, who instituted a search, which, however, was fruitless up to an early hour this morning. It is considered probable, however, that she may have gone to another house than that for which she originally set out, and that the “mystery” will thus be cleared up this morning The Borough Council last evening accepted the tender of J. Webster for the purchase and removal of the two cottages from the Childers Road recreation reserve. The price was £35 ss. The report from the engineer’s department to the Council last night regarding tlie Kaitaratahi gravel pit stated that the line has been under reconstruction, and small supplies of gravel are coming to band ; eight trucks containing 48 yards have been delivered to the two depots during the past fortnight, and have been used on sewerage.

The next term in connection' with the Kaiti Girls’ College will begin—boarders on September 18th and day pupils September 19th, and in this regard it may be emphasised that at this wellknown institution boarders receive in addition to a high grade education alii tlie comforts of a home.
