SUBDIVISION OF RIDINGS.

A PETITION FROM TE ARAI

The Cook County Conncil recently decided to subdivide the Arai and Tol ago ridings, and yesterday a petition was received from ratepayers protesting against the suggested line of subdivision. The chairman said he thought that to the Council’s solicitor as to whether a riding should consist of two road hoards or not, and if the petition can intercept the proposal. A deputation consisting of Messrs. Lees, Ward, and Griffiths, waited on the Council, and after hearing Mr Lees, the matter was referred to the Council’s solicitor. Mr Stock said that the proviso in the Act could only apply if a riding comprised road districts. Each riding had to comprise one or more road districts. The chairman pointed out that the petition could not be regarded as coming from two-thirds of the ratepayers in the riding, which was necessary to stop proceedings in connection with the sub-division. However, they could not disregard such a petition, which was entitled to respect. He suggested that confirmation should he deferred till the meeting of the Council on September loth, when objections will be heard. This was agreed to.
