AUCTION ROOM ROMANCE.
SECRET LOCKET CONTAINING A WISP OF HAIR. There is a rare suggestion of romance in the discovery made at Christie’s after the sale of the jewels of the late Lily Duchess of Marlborough. _ A secret locket was found in the pendant of a magnificent rope of pearls that was sold for £16,000. In the locket was a tiny wisp of brown hair. The necklace was composed' of forty-one well-matched pearls of rare quality, with a pearl and «nd green enamel pendant in the form of a lily. . , After the necklace had been disposed of to Mr. S. J. Phillips, a jeweller, of New Bond Street, it was seen that the pendant was a split pearl. Among the other pieces which were sold were a pearl and brilliant necklace at £7,000 and a pearl and brilliant tiara at £7,500, while a pearl rope of 402 small pearls realised £2,500. The total sum realised in about ten minutes —£33,148 —works out at £3,314 a minute.
