THE PROPOSED NEW SHED. TENDERS ACCEPTED BY HARBOR BOARD. The Works Committee of the Harbor Board reported yesterday on. matters connected with the. wharf as follows: After reading letter of Mr. Preston and personally inspecting the ground, your committee recommend that for the present the cattle and sheep race be shifted to the back of No. 3 shed, and that tike conveniences there be shifted to the recess in front where they can he- easily oonmeoted with the sewerage connection. That the Board take into consideration the question of shifting the stockyard to the Waikanae reclamation. That the overseer take steps to drain and clean the stockyard, and that a. letter be sent to the Sanitaiv Inspector that tne matter complained of is being attended to, and also to Mr. Preston in reply to his letter. That leave be- obtained from the borough authorities for the erection of shed according! to Mr.'McLeod's, plan, and on receipt of their consent tenders be called for the timber, iron for the roof, spouting and plumbing work, to be in next meeting. That the overseer be instructed to have the necessary repairs effected—now wheel to be castand weldless chain fitted ; the old chain to used for buoys as required by the harbourmaster. That someone he appointed to take care cf the crane. That your committee decided not to allow the GieVciic: Shoonfarmers’ Company to use the Board’s connection, but grant them permission to take a connection through the portion of office section; leased to them. The Chairman said that there was only cne consignment of cattle to lie shA"-"d for some little time, and it was thought it would be.better to shift the race portion of the stoekvard when the conveniences were being shifted and were connected with the sewerage works. Regarding the crane, the new wheel had been east, and 1 the chain had been ordered. The old chain would be used as a mooring chain for the dredge. In reply to Mr. Lvsnar, the Chairman said the work of erecting the new shed was to be done, by day labor as decided by the committee. Mr Lvsnar said that they would have a tremendous staff of workmen. He would 1 sooner see the work dome by contract. _ . a Dr. Collins pointed out that a good deal of dissatisfaction- was at present being expressed by local bodies at day labor. Mr. Witters pointed out that the committee was given power to act. Mr. Lys-na-r said that the committee had not the power to authorise the carrying out of such a- large work by day labor. Dr. Collins -said the proper course for the committe to adopt would be to have, got an estimate of the cost of the v/onk by cornu tract amid dav labor, and submitted it to the Board. He moved that the ouestion of the contract for the silied 'bo, referred back to the committee, and they be again asked to report to the Board. Mr. Brown said lie thought that as they had a. good pile-driver, the Board should undertake that portion of the work. If a contractor came along- he would have to hire the pile-driver from the' Board.

The Chairman snid ; tenders had been called for the ironwork and the roof. Mr. White: Tenders should be. called for the work of building the shed. The report was adopted, and the' discussion then dropped until the. tenders were considered, when i’t was decided to accept that of Messrs Evans and Nie'd for the timber work (’£1275) and Messrs F Hall and Soins far the plumbing (£172).
