CANNING FACTORY DESTROYED

A few minutes after nine o’clock last evening a fire broke out in a building fronting on to the Kaiti reclamation and formerly used as a boat-building Sh The Fire Brigade were bolding a meeting at the reel-house and were on the scene in a very short time after receipt of the alarm. Hie flames, however; had a good hold, and the structure had been considerably damaged before the devouring element could be subdued. ~ Messrs Phillips Bros, had recently leased the premises for a 'terra.of two years from the owiier, Mr H. senr., and were carrying on a meat canning business there. The origin of the fire was not known last night. The only insurance on the building was £SO in the State Office, but whether the contents were covered could not he ascertained at the time of the fire.
