DISTRICT PUBLIC WORKS.
HOW THEY ARE PROGRESSING
Mr C. E. Armstrong, Resident Engineer of the Public Works Department, was engaged yesterday in examining the route of the proposed deviation of the main Morere road through the Te Arai estate. Speaking to a “Times” representative last evening Mr Armstrong stated that a good road could be secured round the base of the hills, but the cost of acquiring the land would be considerable, and the, road, if taken by this route, would be of little use until it was met alien.
Questioned as to the progress being made with the railway construction works between Otoko and Matawai, Mr Armstrong stated that matters were proceeding satisfactorily. Tile roads were improving slowly. The contractors were pushing ahead with the erection of the Otoko viaduct. All the girders were now in position except the three main spans, and the viaduct would probably be completed by the end of October. Two parties were busily engaged in making trial surveys for the railway line between Motu and Opotilci, Mr Wilson being in charge -of the party operationg over the Whitikau route, and Mr Campbell directing the gang exploring the Pakihi route. Mr Armstrong added that the completion' of tht Otoko viaduct would enable more rapid progress to be made with the construction of the line, as it would allow of an ample supply of ballast being obtainable.
