SMALL BIRDS PEST.
IMPORTATION OF OWLS.
In order to combat the small bird: pest in the fruitgrowing districts of Hawke’s Bay the Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association has imported forty small German owls, which arrived by the Ruapehu last Friday. The ravages of small birds among the orchards lias reached a rather acute stage, even the buds being eaten off the trees. The owls will be forwarded to Hawke’s Bay. where they will be kept till they become iajcclimatised. they will then he liberated in different parts of the: district. The owls get among the nests of tlie birds at dusk and either destroy them oi’ so frighten them that they leave the district. The association has received the permission of the Government to import the birds.
