MONTHLY MEETING
LBrECIAL TO TIMES.! WAIPIRD BAY, Sept. 2. At the monthly meeting of the Waiapu County Council there were present : Crs. K. S. Williams (chairman), A. B. Williams, J. Knox, G. E. Powell, and G. W. Heald. Correspondence was dealt with as follows : From Thom as Quinn, stating that he had given notice of liis accident through Mr McCracken’s foreman, and had also written himself. —Cr. A. B. Williams moved' and Cr. Powell seconded that Mr Quinn he paid the sum of’ £6 15s compensation for loss of time.—Carried.
From Major-General Godley, asking the Council’s co-operation and assistance in training senior cadets and the territorial forces now being organised. The chairman moved, and Cr. Heald seconded, that the commandant be written to and informed that the Council would be pleased to assist him in any way, but regrets that it has no shed! or building to put at. the. disposal of the Department.—Carried. From Mr A. H. Wallis, asking the Council to raise a loan to complete a dray road to Horeliore boundary; also permission to erect a small shed on the roadside near Makaraka. —Or. Powell moved, and Cr. A. B. Williams seconded, that Mr Wallis be informed that the Council would like him to define the district over which lie proposes the loan should be raised, and to give an approximate idea of the; amount of money required. —Ca nried. From Mr Geo. Grant, re survey of road through Gisborne Harbor Board’s Tauwliareparae block, enclosing a plan, showing the same. —Cr. Heald moved and Cr. Powell seconded, that Mr Grant be informed that the Council will consider his letter. —Carried.
From the secretary of the Taylor Memorial Fund, asking the Council to co-operate to take steps to give the public an opportunity to subscribe.—Received.
From the nnder-secretarv of the Native Department re the pfararoa-Wha-ngapairoa road, referring the Council to the Public Works Department.—The chairman moved, and Cr. A. B. Williams seconded, that the clerk be instructed to write and point out that the road runs through native land; therefore, it was considered the Native Department should form and make the same; also to draw attention to the fact that when private European land is cut up the owners are bound by law to make roads at their own) expense; also that the Minister of Public Works had visited the county, and when approached on the subject, had. distinctly stated that the matter was for the Native Department.—Carried. The South British Fire and Marine Accident Insurance C'o. wrote, quoting rates covering the Council’s staff and employees against accident. —Cr. Heald moved, and Cr. Powell seconded, that the manager be written to and .asked if the company would insure the surfacemen only for £ISOO. —Carried. ' Cranky and Co., Napier, wrote asking for payment of an account for timber. —The clerk to write to Cranby and Co., informing them that a portion of the money due had been kept back as the timber landed did not tally with the invoice.
The engineer's report was read and considered.—Cr. Powell moved, and Cr. Heald seconded, that tenders for the first section of the Piranaumata contract and the Tauwdiareparae Ihungia contract be called within 14 days.—Carried. The chairman moved, and Cr. A. B. Williams seconded, that tenders for the wharf road, Tokomaru Bay, forming and metalling contract, be called within fourteen days.—Carried. The overseer’s report was read and considered. —The chairman moved, and Cr. Heald seconded, that willows be planted on the Te Puia-Takapau line of road. —Carried. Cr. Knox moved and Cr. Heald seconded, that the overseer be authorised to erect groins at Kaionanga.—Carried.
Cr. Heald moved, and Cr. A. B. Williams seconded, that the overseer be authorised to purchase a dray, scoop, and horses for surfacemen at Hikuwai. — Carried.
Cr. Knox moved, and Cr. A. B. Williams seconded, that the necessary bush clearing be done on the Maraehara road, near Mr Hay’s.—Carried. The overseer reported certain, persons for infringing by-law No. 7, and he was authorised to take action. The chairman moved, and Cr. Knox seconded, that all outstanding rates applied for and not paid within 14 days be sued for. —Carried. The Council went into committee to open tenders. On resuming it was decided that the tender of Mr Tami Kiwira and Otararoa, for £467, be accepted for Te Arawa-Awatere road. Cr Heald moved, and Cr. Powell seconded, that fresh tenders be called for the Kopuapounanui and Tauranga-Kari-tuku road contracts. —Carried. Cr. Powell moved, and Cr. A. B. Williams seconded, that the proposer rind overseer be authorised to 1 interview Mr Busby in reference to repairing washouts and culverts on the TokomaruMata road.— Carried. Cr. Knox moved, and Cr. Heald seconded, that fresh tenders be called for the Poroporo road contract. —Carried. Cr. A. B. Williams moved, and Cr. Powell seconded, that the Council purchase a road-grading machine.—Carried. Cr. Powell moved, and Or. Knox seconded, that tlie chairman and Cr. Heald be authorised to affix the common seal to an agreement of contract. —Carried. Payments amounting to £1307 5s lid were passed.
