WIDOW LEFT DESTITUTE.

MONEY FOR A HOSPITAL

A superior-looking woman of middle age came before the Charitable Aid Committo of the Wellintgon Hospital Board at its last meeting, and explained that she was practically destitute. Her husband was dead, and had left her totally unprovided for, but lie had bequeathed all. his money—a sum of about £240 —to the Hospital Board. She had consulted several solicitors about the matter, with the result that the Supreme Court would be asked to decide whether she had not the first claim on her late husband’s estate. In the meantime she would like the committee to advance her a pound or two to buy clothes and help her to live. She had a son in work. He was helping her as far as possible, but his wages were not sufficient to keep them both. Members of the- Board were unanimous in their opinion that the woman was entitled to her husband’s money. The Board did not want it. The Rev. W. A. Evans said the matter had been considered at the general meeting of the Board, and it had been decided to refer the question to the Supreme Court. Miss Kirk, the Board’s inspector, was instructed to inquire -into the applicant's immediate wants and do what she could for her until the case is decided.
