STATE COAL MINES.

ONE WANTED IN THE NORTH

(From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 6. A proposal is being made by Mr. E. H. Taylor (Thames), that the Government should open a State Coal mine in the. North Island, in order that the people may have the same facilities for obtaining cheap coal as are enjoyed by those in the South Island. He suggests that if it is inconvenient- to adopt this course, the Minister of .Mines should open a State coal depot in the North.

HIGHER SALARIES SUGGESTED

The satisfactory condition of the postal revenue disclosed by the annual report, has led to a suggestion, by the Leader of the Opposition that some of the profits of the big State business should he distributed in the form. of increased wages to .the hard-working members of the service. This afternoon Mr. Massey gave notice of a proposal that the PostmasterGeneral should make arrangements to give more adequate salaries to country postmasters.

He severely criticised the Ward Government, and evolved a scheme for reconciliation of capital and labor, based on the adoption of the principles of co-operation to circumstances approaching those, of co-part-nership with limited liability, so that while capital shall be. safeguarded, labor shall participate m the profits. Re explained his proposal at considerable length.
