Wanganui is just now puzzled and alarmed by the discrepancies in estimates by engineers as to the cost of the proposed harbor works. Mr Leslie Reynolds gave estimates, and Mr. it. W. Holmes, chief engineer for the coirony, and these differ materially, more especially in respect of*the construction of sea walls. The “Chronicle” states that Mr. Holmes’ estimate for the extension of the north mole is £104.000 as against £46,140 (Mr. Reynolds’), and for the south mole £BB,000, 'as against £39,060. On these two items items Mr. Holmes’ estimate is £106,810 in excess of that given byJVIr Reynolds, a difference that is almost inconceivable. Other differences almost as startling are apparent in regard to other important features of the work, but in the absence of the full text of the report it is not possible to analyse the discrepancies. It may be that the irreconciliable differences will be found capable of reconciliation, and - that when all the necessary data is available for comparison it will be found that while Mr. Reynolds may have been somewhat too sanguine, Mr. Holmes has erred in like proportion on the other side.
