CHRISTCHURCH-TIMARU ROAD RACE. [PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION.! CHRISTCHURCH , Sept. 7. The annual road race between Christchurch and Timaru was run to-day, the Dunlop Company controlling the event, which started, for the first time, at Christchurch and finishes at Timaru. Out of 121 acceptors 107 faced the starter. The limit men were sent away promptly at 8, the other riders following in batches. The arrangements at the start were admirable, there not be-

ing any confusion. There were well over 1000 spectators to cheer the men away on the long journey. The wea-ther-was raw and foggy, with a slight south-east breeze against the riders, but as the morning wore op the conditions improved all round. The wind dropped, and the roads are reported to be in good order for the greater part of the journey, a few patches only having a loose srirface. <• ’ In the road race the hack marie men had made up 11 minutes at Chertsey (42 miles), and 17 minutes on the limit division at Ashburton (53 miles), but the eight-minute batch maintained their position relatively. The long handicap men closed up in the first half for the journey. Gibson (12min) gained 14 minutes, GalTatly, D. Lynch, and Kennedy (18min division) 10 minutes on these times. Smith, O’Shea, Coulter (scr) and others named should be within striking distance of the leaders before Timaru is reached.

Later.—The race was won by W. C Priab-ble, Christchurch (35 minutes), E. Slow, Fairlie (3min), 2; Coleman, JMamshlands (26min) 3.
