A MAORI MEETING.

GATHERING AT TE IvUITI. (FEB T’EESS ASSOCIATION.! AUCKLAND, Sept. 11. A big Maori meeting at Te Kuiti was opened on Saturday, when Sir James Carroll was welcomed to the town by the Mayor. After speeches by resident and visiting Natives, Pepene Ekotene addressed the gathering, and was followed by the Hon. A. T. Ngata and Sir Jas. Carroll.

The subjects discussed included Maori customs, the combining of the Maoris in both Islands, religion, the law of the country, and the Yeung Maori party. On Sunday afternoon over a thousand Natives were addressed by the Rev. J. Dawson, secretary of the New Zealand Alliance and Mr. Isitt, M.P., on the temperance question, in view of the coming Maori pell. These speakers also addressed a pakeha, gathering in the evening.
