A lion-hunter, who has made & study of that animal’s peculiarities, says that all lions when striking a forcible blow use their left* paw. Horsed fire engines in London will soon be nothing but a memory. The London County Council Fire Brigade Committee are proposing to spend £B3OO in providing five petrol-driven motor escape vans, and an electricadydriven motor turntable long ladder. These will ’ replace four-horsed fire engines, two-horsed vans, and one long-r ladder van. The Finance Committee of the council quotes the Fire Brigade Committee, as estimating the total cost of replacing horses by machinery at £203,020. It is also proposed to build a new. fire-float for the London service at a cost of £6OOO. The loss from fires in London during the last three years is estimated at £4.46,853 in 1908, £699,329 in 1909, and £602,100 in 1910.
