No reply has. yet. been receded by the- Borough Council from the Minister of; Public Works regarding the objections raised by the Council in connection. with the conditions imposed relative to the issue of the Order-int-Council authorising the construction. _ of _ the tramways. Meantime everything is in order/or the calling of tenders. On Tuesday or Wednesday next a deputation representing the Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay. Manawatu, and Wairarapa Chambers of Commerce will wait on the Prime Minister- and _ urge an early start with the- construction of the East Coast railway. The Harbor Board at Tuesday’s meeting will be asked to sanction- the terms asked by the- Wellington Harbor Board for the hire of their dredge, and if approved the dredge will comimienee operations ou-tsidte the pier heads, and cut her wav through to the inner harbor, and be utilised for reclaiming two big lagoons. In addition to carrying out other work, the A. and P. Society to-day decided on the purchase of 51 acres’ at Tom o,ana for a show ground site, the price being £5500. The vendor is Mr. W. Nelslon. Mr. J. 11. Coleman has
promised to give £IOOO towards the cost provided the remainder is dubseribed. Already £425 has been promised. Messrs. B. Chambers, T. 11. Lowry, L. H. McHarcly, and A. 11. Russell are giving £IOO each, and Mr. J. S. McLeod £250. Each- member of the committee has been furnished with a subscription list, and a canvass of the- district is tobe made. It is not anticipated that any difficulty will be experienced in, raising the required sum.
