MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The Committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals met in the Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. Colonel Porter occupying the chair. The chairman, in opening the meeting said that the. society had now been put on a better footing than hitherto. Mr Andrews, who, it will be remembered, figured as the informant in a recent prosecution for cruelty to a horse, was present at the meeting, and in welcoming him the chairman expressed regret that there were not more members like him.

Dr. Coker, through the chairman, informed the committee that be was offering a.prize of three guineas at the coming show for ijfo best horse above 14 hands high with unhogged mane and uncut tail. The chairman spoke in praise of this; object, and urged that a second prize; of one guinea be given by the society.—This was agreed to. Mr Andrews drew attention to the practice of a certain -ranger, whom he named, of taking dogs with him when out after horses and stated- that in many cases where horses were impounded by -him! they were found to be fearfully cut about the fetlocks. The chairman remarked that he was glad to see from recent cases that they had the sympathy of the Magistrate, Mr Barton, who was deservedly severe in cases of cruelty. Some discussion took place regarding the difficulty of finding out the names of certain dray drivers who had been practising cruelty to their horses. The Inspector said that he was unable to lay an information without the names and asked that something might be done. The matter dropped without further discussion. The Finance Committtee, set up at the last meeting of the Society to enquire into the financial position, reported that the balance in hand was encouraging and stood at £l2 11s Id.
