LABOR REPORT FOR AUGUST.
POSITION IN THIS DISTRICT. The skilled trades have improved since last report, more especially the building trades. Last month several carpenters and painters were seeking work, but this month all hands are fully employed, and, as the worst of the winter is over, there will probably be no lack of employment for some time to come. 1
Building trades: Bricklaying fairly busy; several contracts have been let during the month. Carpentering and joinery busy; only one man has inquired for work during the month. Painting busy; all hands fully employed. Plastering lias improved since last report. Plumbipg and gasfitting busy, and plenty of work in view. Woodworking trades: -Cabinetmaking and upholstering fairly busy; all hands fully employed. Sash and door factories and sawmilling busy, and future prospects are good. Wood-turning, etc., fairly busy; no hands, idle. Engineering trades: Agricultural-im-plement making and fitting and turning quiet, no hands out of employment. Leather trades : Bootrnaking (repairshops) busy; all hands fully employed. Saddlery and harness-making fairly busy, but shows a tendency to slacken off during the month. ■Clothing trades : Dressmaking and millinery fairly busy, but less overtime has been worked than last month. Tailoring (order) fairly busy for the time of the year, and the future prospect is good. Retail trades: Clothing—Trade has been rather quiet towards the end of th emonth.. Boots fairly brisk; rather better than last month. Drapery rather quiet, but not exceptionally so for the time of year. Groceries —Very little change from last month'. Printing trades: Bookbinding and printing busy. Meat-freezing, etc., trades very quiet, the freezing-works having closed down. Coachbuilding trades: Blacksmithing fairly busy. Coach and carriage build-tog—-There is a fair number of orders in haml, but trade generally shows a slackening-off since last report.Cycle and motor trades quiet, but no doubt will improve as the spring advances. .. Agricultural operations: Fanning, dairying, etc. —-A considerable amount of ploughing is being done as the weather permits. The creameries are running on alternate days, and if the weather improves no doubt will be going full-banded next month. Miscellaneous : Brickmaking is quiet, and one yard has closed down, but this is due more to the roads being almost impassable than from lack of orders. Unskilled labor: The borough drain-age-works'is reducing hands It is understood that is as due to shortage of money The ratepayers will probably be consulted as to a fresh loan, and if this is decided on no doubt plenty of employment for this class of label will offer" The contractors appear, to be oeing slow, and not nearly as many men have been employed as was expected Forty-eight men have applied for employment, and nine have been sent to work during the month.
